Sustainable & Recycled Underlay
F.A.Q & Contact Information
Do I need underlay?
The straightforward answer is always, yes! Underlay plays many roles in having carpets, such as Insulation, comfort, lengthens the lifespan of your carpet, and much much more.
If you have slightly uneven floors, Underlay helps alleviate this problem and helps avoid the lines from your floorboards showing through over time. This might not show up straight away after fitting but in time with foot traffic, you will slowly put more pressure on these areas and the uneven part or lines from the floorboards will start to show through.
Looking for long-lasting carpets? Most carpets will have a hessian or latex backing, and the others will have a foam backing. While foam-backed carpets are sold as not requiring or having a built-in underlay, this means it can be fitted without an underlay and stick down to the floor, but it also means that’s it is very likely to show through imperfections in the subfloor as well as reduce the lifespan of the carpet. The Hessian or Latex-backed carpets will last longer than the foam back carpets, due to the construction and the strength of the backing. While these are stronger and are better constructed, the life span of the carpet runs alongside that of the underlay. The manufacturer’s guarantee is only valid if these carpets are fitted on new underlay. Imagine rubbing the backing against a hard substance, if you did this for a considerable amount of time the backing would wear away and causes the backing to come away from the carpet. This is called Delamination. Once this process starts, it spreads through your carpet like a virus. You can visually see this by the rippled effect it leaves/creates in your carpet. If you fit a hessian or latex-backed carpet without underlay, your carpet will have around 6 months before this process should start to be visible. This time period is variable though dependant on the amount of traffic and amount of people living in the home.
Among many other reasons we will list further below, we would always not only recommend underlay but ‘new’ underlay when buying a new carpet. The carpet’s lifespan mirrors that of the underlay. So, if you fit a new carpet on an old underlay that has maybe 2 or 5 years left, your new carpet will only have the 2 or 5 years left before the delamination process will begin. new underlay should last many years and this will lengthen the life of your carpet as well as keep your manufacturer’s guarantee valid to allow for even more peace of mind.
Do I need to buy new underlay?
The simple answer is yes.
The carpet’s lifespan mirrors that of the underlay. So, if you fit a new carpet on an old underlay, your new carpet will only last for the few years the old underlay has left in it. Once the underlay comes to the end of its life, the delamination process will begin. New underlay should last many years and this will not only lengthen the life of your carpet but also validate your manufacturer’s guarantee to allow for even more peace of mind.
Once the underlay has been fitted and used, it will start to flatten from being used and walked on. The new underlay will allow a fresh feel as well as a better feel as it will be at its full height and density to give you that luxurious feeling underfoot as well as helping your new carpet to last longer.

What are the different types of carpet underlays?
Carpet Underlay comes in several different types.
PU Foam underlay is typically made from “trim”, which is the name for the unused waste generated from other PU users such as sofas or armchair cushions. These start out life as large PU blocks that are cut down to approximate sofa sizes. Once these are shaped, PU trim waste is collected and used in many manufacturing processes – one of these being PU Foam underlay.
Not only is PU Foam underlay made from recycled materials, but it can also be recycled after use as well which makes it incredibly environmentally friendly.
Crumb Rubber Underlay is one of the most traditional products on the market. Just as the name suggests, it is made from small crumbs of rubber that are bonded together. The rubber is 100% recycled, taken from used car tyres, which makes it a good eco-friendly option. Crumb rubber underlay also has many useful properties such as excellent thermal insulation, significantly reduces impact and airborne noise, durable and long-lasting as well as offers outstanding recovery, preventing indentations.
Sponge rubber underlays have been around since the 1950s. They are extremely comfortable. No other underlay produces quite the same feel underfoot and is exceptionally good at minimising both the impact and airborne sound between rooms. They are incredibly flexible, strong and long-lasting. Where the traditional versions such as crumb rubber tend to crumble at the end of their life, which an effect leaves black or green dust behind. The Sponge rubber doesn’t disintegrate and keep its shape and bounce back for longer. These tend to be the most expensive but highest quality underlays.
